Whether it is lipstick, eye liner, mascara, foundation, eye brow pencil or any product in your make-up kit, the way you apply them makes all the difference. Cosmetics can take a simple look to an absolute stunner if applied right and with proper care. Here are some basics that will help you apply make-up like a professional.
Concealer – investing in a good quality concealer is totally worthwhile because it can take up to ten years off your face right away. It helps you cover up blemishes, dark spots, scars and even birth marks in minutes. Simply dab the concealer on the spot and blend in skin by making outward strokes. Remember to not apply concealer on your eyelids as a base as it tends to wrinkle your eye makeup.
Foundation – good foundations contain hydrating and anti-ageing ingredients benefitting your facial skin. Select the right one as per your skin type. Foundations are available in forms of powder, cream or liquid and a mix of both. Cream to powder foundations blend easily with a brush as well as a sponge and give a nice settled powdery or semi matte finish. Though different types of foundations can be applied with different tools, the general rule you can follow is – use a brush if you desire medium to full coverage and apply foundation with fingers to get a light sheer coverage.
Powder – select a larger brush for putting face powder. Take a sufficient amount of powder on the brush and dust it off properly before applying it on your face. Always apply and blend the powder into the skin from the front of your face and on your T-zone, where you tend to get the shiniest first, with very light application everywhere else.
Bronzer – this gives a bright natural sun kissed glow to all skin tones. Always choose a bronzer that is not too strong, only go two shades darker than your skin tone. Start by applying it on top of the forehead, along the cheekbone and the jawline. Keep in mind to apply bronzer on your neck and chest as well to have an even skin and color tone throughout.
Blush – add color to your face with a little blush. Blush is available in many colors and formulations. You can choose the color based on how you want your skin to look – a slight hue, rosy glow or peachy. Take a pick from powder, gel, cream or tint blush as per your skin. For e.g. cream based blush works splendidly on dry skin. While putting blush, smile, dust the apples of your cheeks, make angular motions towards the temple and then toward your jawline.
Eyebrow – sharp eye brows give your face a sharper look. There are gels, brushes, glosses and powders available but the old brow pencil still remains the most popular tool for shaping and defining eyebrows. When using powder, using a small angular brush is a good idea. To give an immediate facelift effect, use powder or pencil to draw along the tops of your brows.
Lipstick – It is advisable to apply lip balm before applying lipstick to even crevices and smooth them. Whichever lipstick you choose, liquid, matte or gloss, start by applying at the centre of the upper lip, extending outward to the corners of the mouth and then blot your lips. This will give it an even look.
Eye shadow – always choose eye shadow that matches the lightest part of your face. Prepare your lids with a matte base eye shadow and dust it on the entire lid and up to the brow bone. Remove excess pigment.
Eyeliner – when applying eyeliner, get as close to the mirror as you can instead of looking straight ahead, lean angle your head upwards and point your chin to the mirror. Looking down start putting the eyeliner from the inner corner of your eye and extending outwards.
Mascara – remember size matters. Therefore choose the wand size carefully when applying mascara to the upper and lower lashes. Brush the mascara wand through the roots of your lashes and move upwards in a crisscross manner.
